Description

This file contains items on livestock, in particular cattle and horses. The focus is largely on the general care and management of cattle and horses, folklore relating to their care, medicine, dialect terms for livestock, equipment and supplies and working animals. This includes ms. and typed letters on customs and beliefs relating to the care of cattle and horses (November 1964); a photocopy of T. D. Davidson's paper, 'A Survey of Some British Veterinary Folklore', from the 'Bulletin of the History of Medicine', volume XXXIV, number 3 (May-June, 1960), pp. 199-232; the University of Reading Library's 'Accessions of Historical Farm Records up to December 1967' (University of Reading, 1968), 12 leaves; a photocopy of a typed letter from Clive Upton to Mr. Goodier of the Agricultural Research Council, detailing dialect words for various agricultural notions (7 April 1973); a photocopy of L. F. Salzman's paper, 'Some Notes on Shepherds' Staves' , from an unidentified issue of the 'Agricultural History Review', pp. 91-94; a typed letter to Stewart Sanderson from E. Dawson (of the University of Leeds Agricultural Economics Section) with information on pond making and making bricks by hand, collected during a visit to Wetwang (4 September 1964); a photocopy of J. E. Manners' article on dew ponds from 'Country Life' (13 February 1969), pp. 360-363 (n.b. actually [2] pp. only); two copies of Bill Cowley's introduction to The Horse in Cleveland exhibition at the Dorman Museum, Middlesborough, 7-28 October 1967; a photocopy of G. Bernard Wood's article, 'Donkeys in North-Country Lore' from 'Country Life'(30 January 1969), pp. 224-225; ms. notes by Werner Kissling on cow clubs in Arkengarthdale and Wensleydale (undated); and mounted magazine and newspaper cuttings from 'Country Life', 'The Guardian' and the 'Yorkshire Post', on cattle droving and drovers' roads, sheep-shearing apparatus, a hay-rope saddle, fleams and other instruments used in the care of horses, working , and ox teams. Many of the cuttings are largely illustrative. File contents retained in original classification order, and chronologically within this.
