Portrait of Felix Mendelssohn
Description
A glazed and framed pencil portrait of the composer Felix Mendelssohn aged nineteen by Edward Petre Novello. The drawing and frame are in an oval form and the drawing is unfinished below the shoulder. It is backed with a note in a later hand identifying the artist and the sitter, with three layers of newsprint. The frame is ebonised with a decorative metal border on the inside edge. Mendelssohn was part of the Novello family's network: his work was published by (Joseph) Alfred Novello and performed by Clara Anastasia Novello until the relationship deteriorated in 1841 after (Joseph) Alfred published a letter from Mendelssohn praising performances by Clara without his permission.
