Description

This file contains papers relating to the teaching of the development of the English language, including several papers on aspects of Old English grammar; lines from the Prologue to Geoffrey Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' in phonetic script; several papers on William Shakespeare's pronunciation of English, with phonetic transcriptions from 'Othello', 'Twelfth Night'and 'The Tempest'; and examples of Middle English prose from correspondence written by Edmund Stonor, William Caxton's 'History of the Life of Jason', correspondence written by Richard Cely the Younger, Agnes Paston and John Shillingford (Mayor of Exeter), and William Gregory's 'Chronicle'. The papers of Middle English prose were perhaps intended as tutorial or lecture handouts. Two of the papers on Shakespeare's pronunciation of English include Harold Orton's initials in ms. File arranged as found. Also includes a paper 'The Implications of the Cornish Loan-Words' by Robert Leith Thomson an academic in the English Department at the University. This was prepared for a postgraduate seminar in linguistics.
