Horn Branding (Sheep)

Description

Mr. M. Horner of Buckden branding sheep horns in a field at Cray ( Langstrothdale). A metal bucket has been filled with small pieces of wood and set alight in order to heat the metal branding implement. Mr. Horner stands inside the area into which the sheep have been penned and holds the head of a sheep against a wooden fence in preparation for branding its horn. The sheep owner's registered brand will be burnt into the horn, forming a permanent record of ownership. Mounted on Photo File card with LAVC/PHO/P0788. Card 3 in a series of 4.
