Horn Branding (Sheep)

Description

Mr. M. Horner of Buckden preparing to brand sheep horns in a field at Cray ( Langstrothdale). A metal bucket has been filled with small pieces of wood and set alight. Mr. Horner places the metal branding implement into a slot at the bottom of the bucket in order to heat it. The sheep owner's registered brand will be burnt into the sheep's horn, forming a permanent record of ownership. Mounted on Photo File card with LAVC/PHO/P0785. Card 2 in a series of 4.
