This file contains items collected for P. K. Kemp's undergraduate dissertation on migrant hop-pickers in Kent, submitted to the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies in 1970. The includes a photocopy of S. F. Swift's article, 'In the Hop Country', from 'All the World' (October 1886), pp, 247-253; a photocopy of Clarissa Aiken's article, 'Guaranteed Bittered Entirely Without Hops!', from 'The Listener' (12 September 1934), pp. 425-426; a short, mounted cutting from the 'Daily Express' on the loss of hop-picking jobs through mechanisation (February 1969); four index cards with an ms. list of hop-picking photographs from 'The Times', 1949-1959; a typed copy of an article on the future effect of machine-picking on the hop season, from 'The Times' (5 September 1949); a typed copy of an article on the 1950 Hop Festival at Paddock Wood, from 'The Times' (16 September 1950); a typed copy of an article on the hop-picking season, from 'The Times' (8 September 1952); a photocopy of John W. Bridge's paper on Kent hop tokens, from 'Archaeologia Cantiana', volume LXVI (1954), pp. 60-63; a photocopy of information on hops and hop-picking from 'Kent', by Richard Church (details unknown), pp. 258-267; and a photocopy of information on migrant hop-pickers from John Bickerdyke's 'The Curiosities of Ale and Beer' (London: Field and Tuer, [1886]), pp. 92-95.
