Locality Indexes
Description
Ms. record cards created by Harold Orton from the Raw Material and Armstrong College Theses, for the Armstrong College Survey of Northumbrian Dialects. The cards include essentially the same information as is found in the Main Index, and record phonetic spellings of individual words, word class, and orthographic spellings of individual words. Includes data for Bamburgh, Belford, Capheaton, Coanwood, Glanton and Whittingham, Newbrough and Stanhope. Items for each locality were based on the following: - Bamburgh: Orton's fieldwork - Belford: Rimer's thesis, 1933 ( COR/2/6) - Capheaton: Bowman's thesis, 1930 ( COR/2/2) - Coanwood: untraced thesis by J. E. Waugh, 1932-33 - Glanton and Whittingham: Graham's thesis, 1932 ( COR/2/4) - Newbrough: Orton's fieldwork - Stanhope: Banks's thesis, 1935 ( COR/2/8). The cards are arranged alphabetically by locality name and lexical item. Cards for Bamburgh and Belford are housed in Drawer 1 of the wooden drawers containing cards for LAVC/COR/3/1, preceding the main index.
