Notes for Thesis

Description

This file contains draft ms./typed notes relating to a proposed thesis, 'Survey Work in Folklore: A Critical Examination of Sources and Methods'. The author, Jean Whitfield, is described by Angela Clinch in the Introduction to her 1982 PhD thesis on the T. W. Thompson collection of Gypsy Traveller folk tales, as being (in January 1963) the archivist for the Leeds University Folk Life Survey (see LAVC/SRP/1/006, p.1). No thesis was deposited in the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies archive, although in all correspondence her address is given as the School of English, University of Leeds. Reference is made to her research contributing to the University's Folk Life Survey, and that the work she undertook on revising the Uppsala folklife classification scheme could be applied to a folk life archive at Leeds (see LAVC/ARC/1/11). The file contains an outline of Jean Whitfield's research methodology, with notes on a proposed scheme of work, the evaluation and collection of exisiting/new information, a record of events, further aims and a diary of thought regarding the work of Charles Parker. The file also contains a typed questionnaire on children's games and rhymes, compiled by Elizabeth Nielsen (possibly a student at the School of Scottish Studies) and filled out with Jean Whitfield's written responses. It is possible that she kept this as an example of a postal questionnaire survey, to aid in the construction of a questionnaire for her own data collecting. The original wallet folder containing the above items is labelled Letters in reply from Y[orkshire]E[vening]P[ost] Nov. '62, Popular Gardening Oct. '62, Newc[astle] Journal Nov. '62. Such items were not found in this file, but letters from such sources are held in file LAVC/ARC/1/10. Items arranged in chronological order.
