The file contains an ms. letter from Evelyn Briggs on a superstition associated with seeing pigs on the way to the [horse] races (16 October 1972); Mary Corringham's article on talismans and their use in Scotland, extracted from 'Country Life' (26 August 1971), pp. 515-516; a typed extract from a letter from Ingemar Liman on a belief relating to colours at an American girls' school (20 November 1970); Christopher McIntosh's article on the zodiac and zodiacal signs, extracted from 'Country Life' (12 April 1973), pp. 978-979; a photocopy of a typed letter from G. E. Hawkins to Stewart Sanderson on superstitions and beliefs amongst women (10 September 1969); and mounted magazine and newspaper cuttings from the 'News of the World', 'Cumbria', 'The Guardian', 'Country Life' (some photocopied), the 'Sunday Post' (Glasgow) and the 'Yorkshire Evening Post', on goat heads and evil, the Needfire in Cumbria, superstitions amongst students, the use of pebbles for protection against the Evil Eye, the wearing of yellow ribbons, a ritual used by horsemen to gain mastery of the horse, witchposts, a pot for catching witches, circles painted in front of the fire to protect against witches, a sandstone cross at Gosforth (Cumbria) and the tradition of hound christening by the Holme Valley Beagles, Upperthong (West Yorkshire).
