Philological Society

Description

The Philological Society was a supporter of Harold Orton and Eugen Dieth's early dialect survey work, including their construction of a questionnaire for use in gathering data. Orton and Dieth presented a joint paper to the Society in 1946, outlining their early ideas for such a survey of dialectal English. When, in 1961, Orton once again addressed the Society, he was able to describe the progress that had been made in testing and developing the dialect Questionnaire, both before and after the death of his colleague. He was also able to outline the way forward, including the proposed publication of a dialect atlas, and show examples of the Questionnaire and the data collected.
