This file contains items relating to traditional fishing methods, including an ms. letter from Richard R. Blewett to Mr. Martin with a newspaper cutting on the use of charmed words to catch fish, including whistlefish in Cornwall (24 February 1966); a copy of Stewart Sanderson's paper, 'Singing for a Fish: A Study of Custom and Belief', offprinted from 'Heriditas: Essays and Studies Presented to Professor Séamus Ó Duilearga', ed. Bo Almqvist (Dublin: Folklore Society of Ireland, 1975), pp. 287-297; an ms. list of fishing terms in Faroese, Swedish and English; copies of engravings and a postcard depicting prawn-fishing in Normandy using traditional nets (havenets), accompanied by ms. notes, diagrams and a map of the subject region; a typed letter to Sanderson from R. D. Abbott of the Peterborough Museum Society on the Severnlave-net, with accompanying ms. diagram (17 November1965); a typed excerpt from a letter addressed to Martyn Wakelin from Broundand S. Tonkin, Chief Fishery Officer at Mousehole, Penzance, on lobster pots, accompanied by printed diagrams labelled in typescript (full letter and accompanying photograph are held in the Archivists' Papers subfond, LAVC/ARC/3/2); a photocopy of Stewart Sanderson's paper on the Tweed salmon coble from 'Studies in Folk Life: Essays in Honour of Iorwerth C. Mitchell's article on the use of cobles off the Yorkshire coast, from the 'Dalesman', volume 40, number 4 (July 1978), pp. 307-309; an ms. letter with a photocopied extract on salmon fishing with heave-nets on the River Eden, sent to Stewart Sanderson by Peter Frank (May 1979); and mounted magazine and newspaper cuttings from 'Country Life' and 'The Guardian' on net shops at Hastings, cobles, the Brixham trawler, baiting fishing lines in Northumberland and fish treading on the River Kent in Cumberland.
