Mining Communities
Description
This file contains items collected by two Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies (IDFLS) students, for use in thesis research on mining communities. The first set of items relates to Carole Woodall's thesis on the occupational folklore of working men in Middlesbrough and County Durham. These include a photocopy of an 18 pp. ms. letter and two typed letters (possibly IDFLS copies of ms. originals) to Woodall from John Hutchinsonof Ferryhill, on mining customs and life in County Durham (November 1964); and a typed letter on the same subject from John Howe of Sherburn Hill (16 February 1965). The second set of items relates to J. S. Bauldie's thesis on the coal-mining community of Abram in the early 20th century. These include a newspaper cutting with Bauldie's appeal for information (from a Wigan/Lancashire newspaper), and ms. and typed correspondence and an ms. map sent to Bauldie by George Sharratt (April 1969). The correspondence outlines something of community life in Abram, and suggests other potential informants. File arranged chronologically.
