This file largely consists of photocopied articles and magazine and newspaper extracts and cuttings, including G. Bernard Wood's article, 'Relics of Rural Coal Mines', on mining remains in Yorkshire, extracted from 'Country Life' (9 September 1965), pp. 641-643; G. Bernard Hughes' article on gold-mining in North Wales, extracted from 'Country Life' (2 October 1969), pp. 846-848; a photocopy of W. R. Mitchell's article on quarrying at Burtersett, based on conversations with Kit Calvert, from the 'Dalesman' (April 1979), pp. 27-29; a spiral-bound photocopy of the Introduction and Raphael Samuel's chapter on life and work in Headington Quarry, 1860-1920, from 'Village Life and Labour', ed. Raphael Samuel (London: RKP, 1975), pp. xiii-xxi, and 139-263; a printed diagram of the octagonal smelting mill near Langthwaite, Arkengarthdale by Robert J. Clough and Christopher Wells (ca. 1955?); Geoffrey N. Wright's article on the remains of lead mines and smelting mills in Wensleydale, Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, extracted from 'Country Life'(19 May 1966), pp. 1236-1238; and mounted magazine and newspaper cuttings from 'Country Life', the 'Yorkshire Evening Post' and 'The Guardian', on the Tan Hill coalpits in Swaledale, gold-mining in North Wales, the village of Greenhow, a coke oven, the use of canaries to detect carbon-monoxide, smelting furnaces and mills, the Tinners' Parliament on Crockern Tor, and the Barmote Courts controlling Derbyshire leadmining. Many of the cuttings are largely illustrative. File contents retained in original classification order, and chronologically within this.
