Swaledale Boundary Dispute and Other Papers
Description
Original ms. papers, in multiple hands. The principle manuscript in this file (23 leaves) relates to a 19th century boundary dispute in Swaledale. The dispute relates to the enclosure of lands in the manors of Healaugh and Bowes (at Water Cragg), and was heard before the Assistant Inclosure [sic] Commissioner, J. J. Rawlinson, at the King's Head, Barnard Castle, on Friday 21 January 1859. The record of the dispute sets out the land boundaries in their historical context, and includes sections on shepherding and shooting rights. Additional to the boundary dispute papers are a record in pencil of names, articles (apparently farm-related) and of monies paid and owed (undated); an employees' pay bill apparently from the Blakethwaite Smelt Mill (owned by the Old Gang Mining Company), recording names, job, days to be paid for, rate of pay, and amount paid, dated 29 February 1860; and records of household accounts for a John Lowis from October 1869.
