Index Cards
Description
This sub-subseries comprises a single set of index cards, recording alphabetically and orthographically in ms. the different word forms collected in response to Survey of English Dialects (SED) questions IV.1.1 Rivulet - V.3.5(c) Hook/Crook of crane. Next to each word is a number/series of numbers which appear to relate to the occurrence of the words in each regional division of the SED (i.e. Northern Counties = 1; West Midland Counties = 2; East Midland Counties and East Anglia = 3; Southern Counties = 4). The cards are interspersed with Orton's notes on the words, primarily recording information from the 'Oxford English Dictionary' on the history, definitions and usage of the words listed.
