Microfilm of Postgraduate Thesis on the Dialect of Broughton in Furness
Description
A copy of Mabel Round's M.A. thesis (Leeds, 1949), 'The Living Dialect of Broughton in Furness, in the County of Lancashire'. The thesis is based on data collected in Broughton in Furness (Lancashire) between September 1947 and April 1948. Its six chapters give a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1947/1948, the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of accented and unaccented syllables), a summary of the Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels of the living dialect, changes from the Old and Middle English periods to 1948, with regard to consonantal sounds, and the grammar of the living dialect. Appendices contain a description of the basket making process, and specimens of dialect recorded in three local tales. A Word List is also included. The microfilm was produced by Micro Methods Limited of East Ardsley, probably during the 1970s.
