Patterns and Perception of Menstrual Bleeding in Ten Regions

This file contains a study on cross-cultural perceptions of menstrual bleeding, conducted by researchers at the Family Planning Research Unit at Exeter University, on behalf of the World Health Organisation Task Force on the Acceptability of Fertility Regulating Methods. Countries included in the study were Egypt, Indonesia, Jamaica, Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, the United Kingdom and Yugoslavia. In addition to information on the background and objectives of the study and concluding remarks, the study includes information on patterns of menstrual bleeding, qualities of vaginal blood, symptoms associated with menstruation, menarche, menopause, amenorrhoea, inter-menstrual bleeding, the ability to recall and predict menstrual periods, language used to describe vaginal bleeding, explanations for the origins of vaginal bleeding, vaginal bleeding as a factor affecting sexual activity, recognition by others of menstruating women, vaginal bleeding as a factor influencing social interaction, the significance of menstrual bleeding and changes in physical activity, the effect of menstrual bleeding on the adoption of a sick role and management of vaginal bleeding.
