Academic-Related
Description
Documents in this sub-subseries relate to Harold Orton's lecture tours and visits in Europe and North America, organised through two particular exchange schemes, and also to temporary (visiting professorship) teaching positions he held in North American universities. As such, the sub-subseries comprises letters of invitation, both from individual academics overseas, and from organisations promoting and supporting the exchange schemes; related papers concerning finance, accommodation, travel and immigration; itineraries, teaching schedules, course reading lists and newspaper cuttings; Orton's typed reports on some of his trips, and letters of thanks to host institutions and individuals. The sub-subseries contains a set of photocopies made from letters that were forwarded to Orton whilst he was overseas. These deal with a number of academic-related matters, including progress on the editing of word maps for the proposed linguistic atlas of England. This sub-subseries also contains Orton's files of letters received from academic colleagues and other individuals. These cover the editing, funding and publication of the Survey of English Dialects (SED), and SED progress reports; overseas trips; other linguistic surveys and dialect publications; dialect-related enquiries; visiting scholars to Leeds; Orton's work for the BBC; subscriptions and matters relating to learned societies; teaching and postgraduate students; Orton's role as an external examiner; his comments on colleagues' working papers, support for grant applications and recommendations of people for academic posts elsewhere; responses from others to the SED Basic Material volumes; 'The Linguistic Atlas of England'.
