Portrait of George Smith
Description
Portrait of George Smith in a maple frame (Cabinet Maker At Work On Designs in His Office) by T. Bradley dated 1876. The painting depicts George Smith seated at a desk designing furniture, with an open book showing furniture designs for sofas and three more books stacked on table with drawing utensils. There is a spaniel at his side. There is a cabinet in the background and a draped window showing a rural scene of a church spire and sheep. John Bedford identified the sitter as George Smith (1786-1826), and published his findings in Regional Furniture, Vol. XV (2001). The detailed furniture and curtain arrangement in the portrait are an exact quotation from George Smith’s Cabinet Maker & Upholsterer’s Guide, (1826).
