Hay Creel

Description

Mr. T. C. Calvert ( Kit Calvert) carrying an empty hay creel made of hazel bows strung with twine, Hawes ( Wensleydale). Mounted on Photo File card with LAVC/PHO/P0808. With typed note on hay creels and their use. Card 2 in a series of 5. Before the introduction of mechanical transport this was the most popular way of carrying fodder to sheep in high pastures during winter. The creel is light and easy to carry. It is laid out flat and filled with loose hay or cut bales. The two ends are then brought upwards and tied securely with a loose rope attached to one of the bows. When secured, the creel can be carried on the shoulders. Originally held in Photo File: Hay Creel.
