Hill Grazing Questionnaire

Description

This file contains items relating to a survey of the practice and terminology of cattle and sheep grazing on hill pastures in the Yorkshire Dales. The survey appears to have been undertaken as part of Liman's work for the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies (IDFLS), and may have been intended as a contribution to the Folklife Survey. Whilst based at the IDFLS, Liman was registered as studying for a PhD entitled, 'Cow Houses in the West Riding: A Study of Typology, Function and Terminology'. The thesis was probably never completed, but items such as those held in this file, photographs of lathes in Conistone and the surrounding area, and an audio-recording made by Liman at Conistone, may also relate to thesis fieldwork. The file includes a typed copy of a circular letter issued with the Hill Grazing Questionnaire; an ms. list of informants and addresses; and typed copies of the Hill Grazing Questionnaire, headed with the IDFLS name and the designation Special Questionnaire No. 1. The file is arranged as found.
