Notes on old cookery books, compiled by John Hodgkin
Description
The main manuscript contains five chapters devoted to old cookery books of particular interest, as follows: (1) ff.4-16: Ann Wallis: 1673; (2) ff.17-37: Mrs Windham: 1710; (3) ff. 38-60: Captain Thomas Pownall's Book: 1688, and The Lincolnshire Housewife's; (4) ff.61-74: Sr Walter Ralegh's Book of Receipts; (5) ff.76-112: George Noble: Physical Receipts (-Astrological Notes). At the end are inserted 13 loose sheets headed: "Notes from Christian astrology, modestly treated of in three books...by William Lilly...1647", dated 9.i.26. The contents of the manuscript were afterwards issued as the introductory part of John Hodgkin's 'Cookery: a description of the collection of books from the 15th to the 19th centuries ... together with the collector's collations, notes and an introduction on some old and quaint receipt books', 1934. The two printed pamphlets kept with the manuscript are firstly a prospectus for this book, and secondly "A catalogue of cookery books from the collection of J.E. Hodgkin ..." (1931?). In the longest manuscript ff. 75, 86-92, 113-114 are blank. It is written in a sloping hand and bears the author's autograph. Cardboard cover
