Memorial window to Vincent Novello by Emily MacIrone
Description
A watercolour mounted on card of the memorial stained glass window to Vincent Novello, painted by Emily MacIrone in 1863. The window was installed in the North Transcept of Westminster Abbey in 1863, where it remained until it was destroyed by a German bomb in 1940. The main figure is St Cecilia, patroness of music. There was discussion about replacing and reinstating the window following its destruction, but this appears not to have gone ahead. The artist, (Mary Thompson) Emily MacIrone, trained under leading artists in London in the 1840s and continued her career as a teacher of art and regular exhibitor of watercolours. She was the sister of the composer and musician Clara Angela MacIrone, with whom Vincent Novello's daughter Clara Anastasia Novello performed in 1857.
