Scud Winder
Description
Scud winder used for hand twisting straw rope, probably from Suffolk. The instrument is made from two pieces of iron(?) welded(?) together. The first is attached at right angles to a wooden handle. The second is attached to the first piece at right angles, has a hook at one end, and is covered by a loose wooden handle which allows the instrument to be turned unobstructed. In hay rope making, two or three individual lengths of hay which had been plaited or twisted together would have been held at one end and attached to the hook of the scud winder at the other. The person holding the scud winder would have turned the first wooden handle in order to twist the individual lengths of hay together into rope. The second, loose handle is carved with the initials J. G. The object was treated for woodworm during the lifetime of the IDFLS.
