Description
The content of this sub-sub-series relates to the publication of both the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire and the Basic Material volumes. It includes reports on editorial work in progress, Harold Orton's correspondence with potential publishers, the University of Leeds, a North American funding council and foundation, and individual editors regarding editorial progress. A large part comprises correspondence with E. J. Arnold and Son Limited, regarding the printing of the volumes of Basic Material. E. J. Arnold eventually published all four such volumes, and Orton and one of his editors, Martyn Wakelin, were in regular correspondence with successive Directors, Editors and other company staff involved in the volumes' production and promotion. This also contains congratulatory letters and telegrams received on the occasion of the publication of the Introduction and Part 1 of the Survey, and items relating to the launch of volumes 2 (in London, 1962) and 3 (in Birmingham, 1969).
