Candle Mould
Description
Pewter mould in which tallow candles were cast from around the early 19th century onwards. The mould is for six candles, and was likely to have been used by leadminers. It was found amongst a miner's tools in the cellar of a house in Reeth ( Swaledale). The moulds are hollow metal cylinders of the diameter and length of the candles wanted. The wick was introduced into the shaft of the mould by a piece of wire, until in came out of a hole in the neck. The mould was then filled with warm tallow and left to cool entirely before the candle could be drawn out of the metal tube. Mounted on Photo File card with LAVC/PHO/P1471. With ms. note.
